Join VACPA for a one-hour lunch and learn panel on “Adam’s Law” with expert guests Dr. Moe Bates and Joe Wheeless.

On July 1, 2022, “Adam’s Law” was enacted through amendments to Code of Virginia by the General Assembly – directly impacting Hazing Prevention Training at the post-secondary level. The legislation requires staff to conduct in-person trainings for potential new organization members, current organization members, and advisors of student organizations on hazing, the dangers of hazing, including alcohol intoxication, and hazing laws and institution policies and information explaining that the institution’s disciplinary process is not to be considered a substitute for the criminal legal process.

Both of our panelists have been involved with this work on their campuses and will help provide insights on both the opportunities and challenges this new set of amendments has presented to higher education and our work with students. Monique (Moe) Bates, Ed.D. is the Director of Compliance and Risk Management at Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing. Joe Wheeless is the Director of the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life at Virginia Commonwealth University.
